Montana state regulators proposed banning almost all forms of cannabis advertising. If approved, the rule would take effect January 1, the day the state’s REC market opens.

According to the proposal:

  • Businesses would be limited to two outdoor signs, no larger than 11 square feet each, which must include disclaimers about marijuana use.
  • They wouldn’t be able to advertise on social media, tv, radio or newspapers and web sites would have to include “appropriate measures” to keep kids out.
  • Additionally, businesses would be barred from sponsoring charity and sports events, and giving out swag.

The public comment period closes August 23.

Bottom line: Montana isn’t a leading cannabis market, but other states could follow its example.
