Pot Brownies: How to Make & Bake Weed Brownies (Recipe)

By WeedWeek Aug 21, 2020

Pot brownies are the classic marijuana edible, and for good reason. As weed goes more mainstream than ever, thanks to loosening regulations and booming industries, marijuana is being used in ever-more creative ways. However, sometimes it’s worth sticking to the gold – or brown – standards that never seem to fail.

We’ve got a full-proof weed brownie recipe for you, along with some tips and tricks to get the most out of your marijuana baking experience.

How Much Weed Should You Add to Pot Brownies?

The tricky part about cooking and eating edibles is that dosing is not an exact science, and never will be. There are many factors to take into account when deciding how much weed you should be adding, and it isn’t wise to rely on weight alone. First things first, find out the THC concentration of your weed if you can. Many dispensaries include the cannabinoid concentrations on packages of bud.

The recipe below calls for using cannabutter, the potency of which can also be difficult to gauge, especially if it’s homemade. The best way to determine the strength of your cannabutter is to eat a little bit of it and wait and see how you feel. You’ll be able to get a sense for potency, and therefore how much you want to add to your brownies.

Also take into consideration the amount of brownie you are baking. If you’re making a more personal pan of 6 brownies, you’ll need to add less weed in order to achieve highs. If you’re creating brownies to share at a birthday party, upping the amount of cannabis should be a safe bet.

Ultimately, it comes down to experience and understanding your own limits. As the old adage says, start low and go slow.

Pot Brownies Recipe

This recipe comes from Sweet Grass Kitchen, a distributor located in notoriously weed-friendly Denver, Colorado. The key to these brownies is dark chocolate, which not only has more health benefits than milk chocolate, but it helps balance out the marijuana flavors.

    Ingredients

  • 7 ½ tablespoons of butter (a dairy-free option like Miyokos or Earth Balance will work well)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of cannabutter (here are instructions for making cannabutter at home)
  • 6 ounces of dark chocolate at minimum 60% cacao
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature (you can sub for a vegan egg replacer like this one)
  • 1 cup white of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

    Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit
  2. Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with butter.
  3. Melt your regular butter along with your cannabutter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the dark chocolate until completely melted and smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, salt and vanilla until the mixture turns light yellow and has a fluffy consistency.
  5. Add the chocolate and butter to this mixture and combine well.
  6. Add flour a little at a time to this mixture until all is combined.
  7. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for around 25 minutes – the timing will vary depending on the intensity of your oven. Keep an eye on the edges of the brownie – when you see the edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pan, and when the top has a shiny, even crust, it’s ready.
  8. Allow to cool for around 20 minutes.
  9. Divide into 12 even pieces, and enjoy!

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about pot brownies

Question: Is it less expensive to make weed brownies at home?

Answer: Generally, it is much less expensive to make weed brownies in the comfort of your own home. Dispensaries tend to have expensive products across the board – so making your own weed brownies will most likely cut down on cost.

Question: Do pot brownies taste like marijuana?

Answer: It depends on your recipe. It’s possible to make weed brownies using ground-up bud (as long as it is decarboxylated), however you should opt for this recipe only if you like the taste of weed. To minimize the pot-heavy flavors, use a concentrate –  such as cannabis oil or cannabutter – which enables you to have a full dose of THC while minimizing the amount of plant matter that will affect taste.

Question: What if I eat too much?

Answer: First and foremost, know that an overdose of pot is very rarely a serious or life-threatening condition. If the room starts spinning, or you begin feeling anxious, go someplace where you feel safe. Try taking deep breaths, making a conscious effort to relax. Distract yourself by watching a funny movie. And if you can go to sleep, don’t fight the urge – you will wake up the next morning feeling much better.

How Long Do Pot Brownies Last?

The above recipe for brownies will last around one week at room temperature, so you can keep them on your kitchen counter or desk for easy snackability. In the fridge, they’ll last for up to a month. In the freezer, they’ll last even longer – a few months in a sealed container. Before putting your brownies into the freezer, be sure to cut them up into serving sizes so that you don’t have to saw through a frozen block of brownie.

What Are The Effects Of Weed Brownies?

Everyone is different, so experiences can vary when it comes to edibles. Due to being metabolized in the stomach and intestines, the cannabinoid THC – responsible for the feeling of being “high” – is rendered even stronger than when consumed by smoking. Not only are edibles stronger, but they last longer than smoking – anywhere from a couple hours to upwards of eight.

Effects can include:

  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Heightened sensory experiences
  • Hunger, aka, the munchies (warning: have other snacks on hand so that you aren’t tempted to eat more of your delicious fresh-baked weed brownies!)
  • Dry mouth (also known as cotton mouth)
  • Paranoia

How Long Do Cannabis Brownies Take To Kick In?

Generally, cannabis brownies can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours to fully kick in. Unlike smoking, you generally don’t feel the effects from marijuana edibles until they have been metabolized through your digestive system, whereas you can begin feeling it after only a few minutes when inhaled.

Many different factors will affect the length of time it takes for the effects of weed brownies to kick in. Things like body weight, hydration level, and how empty your stomach is will moderate the time. It’s recommended not to eat any type of edible product on an empty stomach (but don’t eat a full meal before edibles either, since you’ll probably get the munchies soon after).

Will Making Cannabis Brownies Make My House Smell?

The smell of cannabis wafting from your kitchen will depend on how much marijuana you’ve used in your recipe. Generally, it shouldn’t be too bad. For the recipe included above, the steps of melting the cannabutter with the chocolate, and the baking process, will release some of that Mary Jane scent.

There are a few things you can do to minimize odors: ensure proper ventilation in your kitchen (open a few windows and even run a fan); use less weed in the recipe; or ensure that you’re doing your baking when you’re home alone to minimize disturbance of others.

Should You Bake From Scratch Or Use A Store-bought Mix?

Whether you bake from scratch or use a store-bought mix comes down to personal preferences. We have it on good authority that the recipe in this article is a solid one, and purists will tell you there’s simply no comparing home-made with pre-packaged. However, a store-bought brownie mix will work well for many weed-brownie recipes. And if you’re looking for convenience above all, then store-bought is for you.

Conclusion

Weed brownies can be a delicious treat, a nice contribution to your friend’s next BBQ, and something you can save in the freezer to enjoy for months. Whether to relax or engaging in some deep chill with friends, when used responsibly, weed brownies can be a fun and tasty way to enjoy marijuana.
