EXCLUSIVE: Catalyst maintains disputed tax stance

Long Beach-based Catalyst Cannabis, one of California's largest retailers, continues to use an excise tax policy rejected by California's tax authorities. The company is currently suing the state to vindicate its approach.
Catalyst's interpretation enables it to lower retail costs for certain products and reduce its tax burden. However, outside lawyers say the practice exposes the company to significant risk.
Catalyst CEO Elliot Lewis declined to comment.
