Arguing “being addicted to a controlled subjstance is not a crime and should not be treated as such,” the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CAPC) called on the federal government to decriminalize small amounts of all illicit drugs for personal possession.

- The CAPC recommended social services, health care professionals, governments, and police should work toward moving drug consumers into treatment, while police should focus on prosecuting trafficking, production, and importation. The Globe and Mail‘s editorial board endorsed the suggestion.
Globe and Mail - Federal health minister Patty Hajdu welcomed the call for “a holistic approach including harm reduction and diversion,” though Crackdown podcast host Garth Mullins noted Hajdu said in January it was “too premature to have a conversation about full decriminalization.”
