Former Parent Company CEO Troy Datcher dies
Terrence “Troy” Datcher, the first Black CEO of a large publicly traded cannabis company, died after a brief hospitalization. He was 55.
Datcher joined The Parent Company in September 2021, less than a year after it launched Jay-Z’s brand Monogram. A former Clorox exec, then Parent Company chairman Michael Auerbach said Datcher would help build the first 100-year cannabis company.
Instead the Parent Company struggled with the challenges that have bedeviled many of its California peers. The partnership with Jay-Z fell apart and in July 2023 it merged into Gold Flora. Since the deal, Datcher served as chairman of the combined company.
“Troy exhibited remarkable dedication in his mission to effect positive change and empower others to do the same,” said Laurie Holcomb, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Flora in a statement. “His vision for an industry based on diversity, equality, and community was an inspiration to all of us who benefited from the opportunity to work with him.”
“He will be missed by all of us who knew and worked with him, and we offer our sincerest condolences to his wife, daughter, and mother, as well as all his many friends and family,” Holcomb said.
