BECERRA, 33 STATE AG’S PUSH FOR LEGAL BANKING AMID COVID

On behalf of cash-laden cannabusiness, California attorney general Xavier Becerra and 33 other state AGs are bringing a legal-banking plan to the Capitol.

Point blank: The pandemic has driven up the need for safer cannabis transactions.

  • On May 15 the House of Representatives added the idea of granting cannabis banking access as part of the $3T HEROES Act.
  • The bipartisan group of 34 attorneys general mobilized in the wake of loud Republican outcry over safe banking’s inclusion.
  • The May 18 letter to Congressional leaders—signed by Becerra—says that public safety threats since the contagion situation “have intensified in the months since the pandemic began.” Related: banking issues addressed in Rep Earl Perlmutter’s (D-Colorado) efforts  last year.
